In a private audition with Republican donors, some of Donald Trump's potential minority running mates downplayed their ethnic backgrounds, according to a recent report. The event, held at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort, featured several candidates vying for the vice presidential spot, including former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.).

According to sources familiar with the event, some of the candidates emphasized their conservative credentials and policy positions over their ethnic heritage. Nikki Haley, for instance, barely mentioned her Indian American background, instead focusing on her foreign policy experience and hawkish views on China.

Similarly, Sen. Tim Scott, the sole Black Republican in the Senate, did not emphasize his race or discuss issues related to racial justice or diversity. Instead, he highlighted his business experience and tax-cutting proposals.

The event highlights the complex dynamics at play in the Republican Party's efforts to appeal to minority voters. While the party has sought to showcase its diversity by elevating candidates from various ethnic backgrounds, some of these candidates seem reluctant to emphasize their minority status, potentially fearing it may alienate white conservative voters.

The approach contrasts with Democratic efforts to celebrate and mobilize diverse constituencies. The private audition underscores the ongoing debate within the GOP over how to expand its appeal beyond its predominantly white base.
